Set atop the rugged coast of Fajardo, Puerto Rico, El Conquistador Resort has the visibility and welcome of a lighthouse seen by a ship lost at sea. The property is impossible to miss: settled on top of rocks and jungle. It’s a beauty to be seen in the distance, but the best views come from inside the property. Guests are treated to a scenic drive through a manicured golf course and gardens before arriving at the hilltop resort that overlooks crystal waters. Not bad, for a place closed twice by natural disasters.
El Conquistador recently reopened to the public in 2021 following the damage caused by Hurricane Maria. The resort had to close for several years following the hurricane, at which point El Conquistador Resort lost its affiliation with the Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts collection. The hotel is having a major comeback, though. Now the resort offers an unparalleled experience that seamlessly blends the beauty of the Caribbean with top-notch amenities and rich history.
El Conquistador has something for every type of traveler: for those seeking a romantic escape, a family vacation, or a solo adventure. It’s one of those places you just have to experience.
A Brief History of El Conquistador Resort
El Conquistador Resort first opened its doors in 1963. From that point on, the resort captured the essence of Puerto Rico’s natural beauty and cultural richness, attracting guests from all over the world.
Over the decades, it has become a favorite retreat for celebrities, dignitaries, and travelers from around the world. While the resort has evolved through various renovations and upgrades, it has managed to retain its classic charm and sophistication.
However, the resort has also endured its fair share of challenges. El Conquistador Resort was forced to shut down in the 1970s following the Middle Eastern Oil Crisis. It reopened in 1991and enjoyed almost 30 years of uninterrupted luxury until Hurricane Maria came in 2017. The damage to Puerto Rico is well documented and, unfortunately, still felt among the most vulnerable communities nearly a decade later.
But El Conquistador came back stronger and better than ever. The design of El Conquistador showcases the breathtaking landscape of the island. The resort is perched on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea, offering stunning views of nearby islands like Vieques and Culebra.
This unique location allows guests to immerse themselves in both the luxurious amenities of the resort and the natural wonders of Puerto Rico.

The Luxurious Accommodations at El Conquistador Resort
One of the standout features of El Conquistador Resort is its impressive array of accommodations: 900 rooms, suites, and villas, all catering to a variety of preferences and budgets. Each room is elegantly decorated, featuring modern amenities and private balconies that allow guests to enjoy panoramic views of the ocean or lush gardens.
For those seeking an extra touch of luxury, the resort’s villas provide a more spacious and private setting, perfect for families or groups traveling together. These accommodations come equipped with full kitchens and living areas, making them ideal for extended stays.

A Warm Welcome at El Conquistador Resort
When you first pull up to the long, winding driveway that splits through the resort’s dedicated golf course, it’s a bit like crossing a border into a new country. El Conquistador Resort is, of course, part of Puerto Rico, but at the same time, it is entirely separate.
Entrance into the lobby rewards you with a view of the pool built into the cliffside and a blue ocean that hugs the horizon. But you wouldn’t have to look to know it’s there. The huge bay windows let in a salty sea breeze to flutter the drapes and tousle your hair.
The lobby is not so much a welcome space into the resort, but a one-stop shop for essentially anything you would need on your trip. There are restaurants, swimwear shops, a cafe, and a pharmacy all on the same floor level.
The Vibe at El Conquistador Resort
The same week I came to El Conquistador Resort, a huge U.S. corporation was also there to host their annual employee retreat. Totally unrelated to the overall resort experience, but a hilarious mention nonetheless.
It appeared our two itineraries were aligned perfectly. My arrival day was also their first day at El Conquistador. Everyone was well-behaved and wearing suits, all sipping Bellinis near the lobby. Slowly, as the days progressed, those buttoned-up employees turned into piña colada-guzzling ravers, and chaos ensued.
Although there were tons of people jumping in the pools and queuing at the bars, it never once felt crowded. El Conquistador Resort is definitely big enough to accommodate a crowd without making other guests feel squished.

Things to Do in El Conquistador Resort
El Conquistador Resort truly excels when it comes to amenities. Take the hotel tram from the resort rooms down to the private marina and get instant access to an entirely new set of exciting things to do.
Here are some highlights that make it an exceptional choice for travelers:
Coqui Water Park
Families will delight in the Coqui Water Park, a vibrant area featuring pools, water slides, and a lazy river. This water park is designed for guests of all ages, providing a fun and safe environment for children and adults alike.
Whether you want to splash around with the kids or relax by the pool with a cocktail, the Coqui Water Park is the perfect spot for a day of fun in the sun.

The spa also features a fitness center equipped with modern exercise machines and offers various fitness classes to help you stay active during your stay.

Dining Options
El Conquistador boasts a diverse range of dining options, ensuring that every palate is satisfied. Guests can choose from several on-site restaurants, each offering unique culinary experiences. From fine dining to casual fare, the resort highlights local flavors and international cuisine.
For a romantic evening, consider dining at BONO, El Conquistador’s take on fine dining. It’s an Italian chophouse with a balance between the expected (carpaccio and other meat-heavy dishes) and the unexpected (fresh lobster ravioli with brown butter sauce).
Alternatively, the casual eateries offer delicious options for families and those on the go. I loved Palomino, which is located right next to their marina. There is nothing quite like enjoying ceviche and a refreshing cocktail with dockside views.
Golf Course
Golf enthusiasts will appreciate the resort’s 18-hole golf course, designed by renowned architect Arthur Hills. Set against a stunning backdrop of the Caribbean, this course provides a challenging yet enjoyable experience for golfers of all skill levels.
The course’s lush greenery and ocean views make it a must-play for visitors looking to combine their love of golf with a tropical vacation.

Private Beach and Marina
The resort also offers access to a private beach and marina, providing guests with ample opportunities for water sports and relaxation.
Spend the day lounging on the beach, swimming in the clear waters, or taking part in activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, and sailing. The marina offers boat rentals and excursions, allowing you to explore the nearby islands of Vieques and Culebra.
Attractions Near El Conquistador Resort
The resort’s prime location in Fajardo makes it an ideal base for exploring some of Puerto Rico’s most stunning attractions. I suggest spending a few days first in San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, before driving to El Conquistador.
The vibe at the resort is more relaxed and low-key, which makes it a perfect balance to unwind after the dancing, drinking, and lively energy of a city. Here are a few highlights of things you can do in and near the resort.
El Yunque National Forest
Just a short drive from the resort is the adventure waiting for you at El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. This lush paradise offers a range of hiking trails, waterfalls, and opportunities to observe diverse wildlife.
We rented quads and drove through the muddy pathways in El Yunque. We stopped at a point in the rainforest where we drank fresh coconut juice and ogled at the natural orchids growing off the sides of trees.

Bioluminescent Bay
Fajardo is home to one of the world’s most famous bioluminescent bays, Mosquito Bay. A kayaking tour through the glowing waters is an unforgettable experience.
As you paddle through the bay at night, you’ll witness the water light up with bioluminescent organisms. It’s a magical, otherworldly atmosphere. It’s a must-see for anyone visiting the area.
Culebra and Vieques
The nearby islands of Culebra and Vieques are easily accessible by ferry, making them perfect for day trips. These islands are known for their pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters, ideal for snorkeling, swimming, and sunbathing.
Flamenco Beach on Culebra is often ranked among the best beaches in the world. Beach lovers will enjoy the scenic views and silky sand.
